Lydia Dona & Victoria Manganiello at 375 Hudson Street

April 21, 2023 Jay Grimm

Left: Lydia Dona, Levels in Momentum (detail); Right: Victoria Manganiello, Untitled 13

375 Hudson Street is pleased to present joint exhibitions of artwork by New York-based artists, Lydia Dona and Victoria Manganiello in the Lobby Atrium through January 2024. Inspired by the relationships between technology and everyday life, both artists explore the human experience through the lens of abstraction – Dona in paint and Manganiello in fiber. Please join us for the reception on Wednesday, April 26th from 5:30 - 7:30 PM to meet the artists and learn more about their work!

Balancing on the edge of abstraction and representation, Lydia Dona’s dynamic paintings reference contemporary urban life. Dona moved to New York City from Israel in the early 1980’s to study at the School of Visual Arts and then Hunter College and never left. The exhilaration of living in a city known for fostering innovative artists as well as its visual stimulation marks her practice. The works on view at 375 Hudson offer a panorama of ten years of the artist’s output and document her creative response to this rich milieu.

Created with a wide range of techniques, from the ancient to the analog, Victoria Manganiello’s rich textile works explore the relationships between traditional and digital technologies. Combining hand-spun yarns and naturally derived dyes with synthetic fibers and mathematically programmed patterning, Manganiello simultaneously subverts and pays deference to her centuries-old craft. Her exhibition at 375 Hudson, Automata Interlace, weaves stories of the past with the mood of the present to create experiential works that speculate on the future.

Installation View: David Headley, Jungle (2022), acrylic on canvas, 80 x 144 inches

2 Grand Central Tower is pleased to showcase the work of Brooklyn-based artist David Headley in the Lobby Atrium through January 2024. David Headley’s monumental paintings are discrete explorations of the endless possible combinations of color, form, and gesture. In 2008 he undertook to produce 120 giant triptychs, each 38 feet wide, which envelop the viewer in their vibrating color and floating forms.

Headley was born in Washington, PA, in 1946. He has a BA in Literature from Washington & Jefferson College, 1968, and was with the US Army in Vietnam from 1968-1970. Since 1979, he has lived in New York City.

Tracy Miller at 860 Washington Street

October 21, 2022 Jay Grimm

860 Washington Street is pleased to present Elsewhere, an exhibition of four works by New York-based painter Tracy Miller in the lobby gallery through April 2023. Miller's vibrant still-life paintings of food have been described as "chaotic buffets in oil," which blur the lines between abstraction and realism. Her canvases are packed full of sweets, each with beautifully piped impasto paint, nestled amongst expressive swaths of color to form a fantastical landscape for her feasts.

Kim Uchiyama at 499 Park Avenue

September 22, 2022 Jay Grimm

The Lobby Gallery at 499 Park Avenue is pleased to present Heat & Shadow, an exhibition of paintings by New York-based artist Kim Uchiyama, beginning September 22, 2022. Inspired by time spent in Sicily, the works on view have an earthy, visceral presence, using color and material to capture the essence of the Mediterranean island. These “slow paintings” reward slow looking - as Uchiyama notes, "light and shadow are seemingly opposite, yet together they outline the course of each day, conveying us from one moment to the next." The exhibition is accompanied by a brochure and essay by Lilly Wei and is the ninth show organized at 499 Park Avenue by Jay Grimm Art Advisory.
